Opera wants to help you browse the web for even longer on your MacBook. The latest developer version of its OS X web browser includes a new power saving mode that drains less energy when you’re on the move and need all the battery life you can get.
“It’s extremely frustrating to run out of battery on your computer, whether you are out traveling, watching videos, or you have just left your charger behind,” says Opera’s Krystian Kolondra. “Our new power saving mode will nudge you when the laptop starts to consume battery, and, when enabled, it can increase the battery life by up to three hours.”
You can activate power saving mode by clicking the battery icon that will appear alongside the address bar whenever your notebook is unplugged from its charger. If you forget to activate it, Opera will prompt you to do so when your laptop battery gets low.
Opera purchased SurfEasy last year and is using their service as the backbone of their free VPN app. SurfEasy is still offering a paid option that gives you access on your computer, as well as your mobile phone for those who want a full service VPN. This is also similar to the service that Opera recently introduced in their developer preview of their desktop web browser.
Beyond just the VPN, Opera also baked in a tracker blocker that prevents trackers from following you around the web, and an ad blocker. That makes this almost a 2 in 1 app. Instead of having an app to block trackers and ads, then a second app for a VPN, you have one for both. Blocking ads and trackers are both enabled by default, though I recommend disabling the ad tracker. Great sites that provide free content, just like you are reading right now, rely on ad revenue. The ad blocker in the Opera VPN app is all or nothing, with no way to whitelist certain sites. So, at least until a time whereas I can support the sites I enjoy, I keep it turned off.
Many people will find a need for a VPN. Whether accessing content while traveling abroad, The Opera VPN app is a free and dead simple way to take advantage of these features.

Nokia Lumia 1020 launch in India Taiwan and Singapore
In India the 41 megapixel handset will hit store shelves on the 11th October and will come with 1 year’s free insurance courtesy of New India Assurance and dedicated support from the Nokia Careline.
Buyers in India will also get an App Voucher worth INR 1000. Vodafone users of Lumia 1020 will be offered 2GB of 3G data usage per month for 2 months, at no extra cost. The price has not been announced.
In Taiwan the handset will hit stores on the 8th October and will cost NT$24,900 (US$842).
Finally, the handset will be available in Singapore on the 5th October for S$999, bundled with the Camera Grip accessory that’s worth S$98. It will be available from the three Singapore mobile operators with subsidized prices on contract.
The Asian roll-out will continue with the Nokia Lumia 1020 also launching in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam soon, starting in October.

Apple released iOS 7 to the public this week and also its two new iPhones, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. To go along with iOS 7 and these new iPhone models developer NotCom has released an update for TinyUmbrella that supports saving iOS 7 SHSH blobs of all devices including the iPhone 5s/c.
According to NotCom’s official blog post “I just updated TU for the 4 new iPhone 5* devices. TU supports saving SHSH for iOS 7 and 7.0.1 (for the new devices about to be released). Perhaps eventually we’ll be able to restore to these firmwares using local SHSHs but remember that currently local restores are primarily for older devices (non a5 devices and lower!).”
If you have an A5 device and above running iOS 7 you might as well save your SHSH blobs just to be safe. Why save your SHSH blobs? Well…
I have said this many times, but I am going to repeat myself. Although the usefulness of saving your SHSH blobs is becoming less and less, the possibility that a new exploit could be found to once again re-open downgrading is pretty high. It is better to save your SHSH blobs in case you accidentally update to a new firmware version and a downgrading solution is found requiring them, rather than missing out on the downgrade because you were too lazy to save your SHSH blobs. Furthermore, saving your SHSH blobs allows you to re-restore to the same firmware version you are currently running, when Apple stops signing it.

Noctetts Heroes Trilogy and their own complete trilogy reupped by request
Included here are the following: Contrasts (1979), Full Score (1980), and their best work, Heroes Trilogy (1982).
Long long ago I posted the first two with rips (here and here) now long since dead I feel probable but omitted the last which ironically was their most well-rounded and enjoyable set of compositions.
Today its nice to listen to all three as a trilogy and explore the evolution of the compositions, which as mentioned before spring mostly from the mind of trombonist / bandleader Peter Herborn.
The big band sound is quite agreeable thanks to the lack of standard American jazz cliches combined with the influence, as always in European jazz, of the core classical music education. And by this time of course the progressive tendencies in German jazz were very strong, insurmountably so presumably (unlike the case in the split-off Western half of the former Pangaea). The cover of Heroes is atrocious, needless to state, and a certain turn-off for anyone who wouldnt have known anything about the grooves information content, nor the performers database. But the side b, the trilogy, composed by Herborn, is certainly impressive despite its theme: 1) Hollywood, 2) Groucho, Chico, Harpo, Marx [sic] 3) Bop for Bogey. We shall not complain about the sources of inspiration for the composer, if the end result is such a magnificent, symphonia-like oeuvre, with echoes everywhere of the modern classical compositions he might have adulated as a young man, much like my own biographical turn...
The first part of the trilogy makes my case entirely clear:
Modern dissonance, film noir soundtrack, thoughtful passages in whole tone dreams, and the added touch of a Hammond Organ in the chordal substrate (a moog solo appears in the third part): I particularly love how he transcends Gershwin in his classical-jazz hybrid style-- well, its too polite, he leaves Georges Rhapsody in Blue behind in the dirty black dust with this symphony...
As always, the tragedy in blue is that Rhapsody is heard every day in a concert hall somewhere in the world, but never Mr. Herborns work... can we not bring some justice to the art of music too?
