The first ever United States-Africa Leadership Summit has opened in Washington DC, with President Barack Obama promising to assist African leaders tackling the increasing Ebola Virus cases.

The summit, presided over by Obama, was attended by at least 48 African leaders, including President Goodluck Jonathan.

In his opening remarks before they went behind closed door session, President Obama said he would help the African leaders deal with the Ebola crisis, promising to stand with the people of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone so that they could overcome the challenges.

He expressed deep thoughts over the those who have been affected by the outbreak, especially those who lost loved ones even in the midst of the challenges, saying that he sees a new Africa emerging.

President Obama stated that Africa had the world's fastest-growing economies, a growing middle class, and the youngest and fastest-growing population on earth, who would help shape the world as never before.

Obama is grateful to African leaders who are embracing economic reforms, and attracting record levels of investment expressing gratitude to the security forces and African peacekeepers who are risking their lives to meet regional threat while a new generation of young Africans is making their voices heard.

According to him Africa's rise means opportunity to transform the relationship between the United States and Africa, one of the reasons for the summit.

"The summit will deliver more prosperity, more security and more justice to the citizens of Africa and the United States,"he said.

Just before the main event started, President Jonathan had several bilateral meetings, where he demanded more effective international sanctions against countries, organisations and individuals that sponsor terrorism.

At the summit proper, only two African leaders were absent, the President of Liberia and that of Sierra Leone, apparently due to the increasing cases of Ebola Virus infections.

President Jonathan delved into why the summit was important, observing that Africa had the worlds fastest growing economies today and that America must be part of the progress in trade. He emphasised the need for security cooperation amount African countries and the US to help tackle terrorism in some parts of Africa.
